Central Alabama Folks: Check Out BirminghamWatch!
There’s a new place to find public service journalism on the internet: BirminghamWatch.
The news site officially launched its first collaborative effort with Alabama School Connection earlier today: a close look at remediation rates for high school students in the Central Alabama area.
Oxford High School stood out as one whose remediation rates are relatively low, and we found out what they’re doing to make sure their students are well prepared for college.
BirminghamWatch is a nonprofit, nonpartisan news organization that will focus its coverage in four main areas: government, education, the economy, and the environment.
According to their web site, the news organization will “concentrate on public service, investigative and explanatory journalism as many news organizations do less of this challenging work.”
BirminghamWatch is a project of the Alabama Initiative for Independent Journalism, incorporated in February 2014.
Carol Nunnelly, known locally for her decades heading up enterprise and investigative reporting at The Birmingham News, launched the effort with the help of Weld for Birmingham‘s Mark Kelly and Birmingham attorney Jerome Lanning.
Alabama School Connection is thrilled to be partnering with BirminghamWatch to provide coverage of education issues.
This is the first in a series of Numbers That Matter.
