Notes from the State Board of Education Meeting and Work Session – July 9
Here is the full writeup on the Tales from the Meeting blog.
We have a new head of the State Board of Education: Dr. Charles Elliott. Even though Governor Bentley is technically the President, he rarely attends. Ella Bell was re-elected as President pro Tem.
Calhoun County got their Innovation/Flexibility Waiver request approved.
Lots of new rules were discussed/adopted/announced/amended.
An overview of the accountability plan within Plan 2020 (what amounts to the waiver requested from Adequate Yearly Progress) was shared.
State Superintendent Dr. Tommy Bice spoke about why achievement measures were set differently for different God-given, or since-birth-earned characteristics.
We learned a bit more about the School Grading System (parents and families, get ready to give your input!)
And then, there were more proposed rules.
The next Board meeting is August 8, next work session August 22.
School starts for most (if not all) districts on August 19.
