Class of 2013 Remediation Rates: 2- and 4-Year College Breakdown

Remediation Rates Class of 2013 BreakdownWe recently looked at the remediation rates for the class of 2013. In the initial examination of those rates, I couldn’t help but notice that in many cases there was a tremendous difference in remediation rates among the 2- and 4-year Alabama college enrollees graduating from the same high school.

Statewide,

  • 46.1% of the class of 2013 who enrolled in a two-year college in Alabama were enrolled in remedial classes during the Fall 2013 college semester
  • 16.8% of the class of 2013 who enrolled in a four-year college in Alabama were enrolled in remedial classes during the Fall 2013 college semester

I make no inferences as to why that might be, just that these numbers bear further investigation.

Based on feedback received after the first article was written, I offer this simple advice to the class of 2014 and their parents: before you enroll in a remedial course, investigate whether you really need to take that course. The criteria by which the 2- and 4-year colleges place a student into a remedial course vary widely. Make certain you are making a wise investment.

The source for these numbers is the Alabama Commission on Higher Education‘s high school feedback reports for fall of 2013. Please note that these numbers only represent students who graduated high school in 2013 and were enrolled in a remedial course in an Alabama public college during the fall of 2013, the student’s first semester of college. Students who attended college in a private or out-of-state school are not represented in ACHE’s reports.

The first table presented here is one that looks at remediation rates for 2- and 4-year Alabama college enrollees by district.

The next two tables will separate the remediation rates for 2- year and 4-year Alabama college enrollees by high school. The only good way to present these two tables here is in a Google spreadsheet.
